Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has expressed his strong dissent against the growing calls for reserved parliamentary seats for minority groups in Fiji, particularly those evidenced during a recent consultation by the Fiji Law Reform Commission in Rotuma. Lal argued that Fiji’s current electoral system, established under the 2013 Constitution, is built on the principles of fairness — where every vote carries equal weight, regardless of a citizen’s ethnicity or background.

Lal emphasized the importance of maintaining a unified parliamentary representation, urging that the focus should not be on dividing Parliament along racial or ethnic lines but rather on cultivating unity amongst all Fijians. “We do not need to divide Parliament along racial or ethnic lines. What we need is unity,” he stated. He is advocating for leaders who represent the collective interests of the populace instead of being factional representatives of specific groups.

The young MP called for a leadership style that is forward-thinking, as he believes that the push for ethnic seat reservations reflects outdated notions that do not align with the aspirations of Fiji’s youth. Lal articulated a vision where political priorities center on pressing issues such as job creation, economic growth, and community security rather than identity politics. He believes these fundamental challenges should be at the forefront of political initiatives.

His comments echo previous critiques where he has denounced political maneuvering that overshadows immediate societal issues such as rising living costs and declining public services. As highlighted in past statements, creating an inclusive and representative governance structure is vital, whereby all voices are heard, and substantive dialogue prevails over tokenism and political theatrics.

Lal’s insistence on a united approach could potentially pave the way for a more cohesive and empowered Fiji, driven by a new generation of leadership that seeks to address the real challenges facing the nation. There is hope that collectively, Fijians can pursue progress that transcends divisions and fosters an environment where every citizen’s needs can be effectively represented.

Fostering this type of inclusive political dialogue may strengthen public trust in governance and encourage constructive engagement among all communities, which is essential in achieving a collaborative vision for Fiji’s future.
