As Fiji gears up to celebrate the 146th Girmit Commemoration in Labasa this weekend, a resounding call for unity and shared identity has emerged from one of the community’s oldest descendants of the Girmitiyas, 96-year-old Ameer Ali from Delailabasa. Ali, who has resided in this area since 1962, emphasizes the significance of harmony among diverse ethnicities and religions for fostering a thriving community.
Reflecting on his life experiences, Ali states, “For me, whether you are Fijian, Muslim, or Hindu, everyone is one and I am a living testament to that.” His enduring friendships with various community members have been pivotal in securing his land and shaping his life in Fiji. He actively participates in numerous local events, embodying the spirit of inclusivity.
Ali highlights the importance of maintaining these connections and urges younger generations of Girmitiya descendants to appreciate and uphold their heritage, particularly through agriculture, which has historically been vital to their success.
The upcoming Girmitiya Commemoration is set to unfold at Subrail Park in Labasa from Saturday to Monday, under the theme “Preserving the Past and Envisioning the Future.” This year’s event not only promises to honor the struggles and contributions of the Girmitiyas but also aims to strengthen community ties, as it has in previous years.
Similar recent discussions have reiterated the essential role of the Girmitiya legacy in fostering unity among Fiji’s diverse cultures. Government initiatives, including a $200,000 budget for the event, demonstrate a commitment to cultural preservation and inclusivity, recognizing the historical significance of these celebrations. By creating spaces for storytelling and honoring the sacrifices of their ancestors, the Girmit Day celebrations aim to cultivate a sense of pride and mutual respect among all Fijians, instilling hope for a united future.
The tone of this commemoration is resolutely positive, with events designed to not only reflect on past hardships but also inspire future collaboration and community strengthening.
