The Construction, Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) and Aspen Medical are set to participate in a mediation session on Monday, aiming to prevent a strike that could impact operations at their Lautoka and Ba hospitals. Approximately 200 union members are poised to walk off the job starting next Thursday if the mediation does not resolve ongoing disputes concerning the Union’s Log of Claims.
The Arbitration Court has referred the matter to the Fiji Mediation Centre after previous mediation attempts failed. CETWUF National Secretary John Paul expressed hope that Aspen Medical might reconsider its position, as past negotiations have seen the company reluctant to negotiate in good faith, often blaming the government for the deadlock.
Paul stated, “If the mediation scheduled in Suva on February 3, 2025, does not yield a positive outcome, the strike will proceed as planned at 7 AM on February 6, 2025.” He emphasized that CETWUF is running out of patience regarding the situation.
This upcoming mediation is critical as it may determine the trajectory of labor relations in the healthcare sector in Fiji. The union’s determination to resolve the issues reflects a broader pursuit for fair wages and improved working conditions, and a successful mediation could set a precedent for future negotiations in the industry.
In a broader context, labor disputes often underscore the importance of communication and compromise in maintaining a harmonious workplace. It’s hoped that this mediation will lead to a fruitful resolution, benefitting both the workers and the healthcare system in Fiji.
