Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko has expressed concern over the invasion of the country’s airspace by an unidentified drone, coinciding with the movements of a Chinese naval vessel near the PNG and Australia border. The drone was detected approximately 6 kilometers inland from Mabaduan village, raising alarms as it flew close to the Australian border at the same time that the Chinese frigate Hengyang was navigating through the Torres Strait and subsequently joining two other warships for live-fire drills in the Tasman Sea.
Local observations described the drone as having a distinctive “stingray shape” with one light in front and two at the back, initially mistaken for a small aircraft. The Australian Defence Force confirmed that no drones were launched in the region at that time.
Experts, including Dr. Malcolm Davis from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, speculate that the drone was likely a reconnaissance unit deployed from the Chinese ships to collect intelligence on activities in the area, allowing for better operations during potential crises. Tkatchenko stated that it would be troubling if foreign military assets entered PNG’s airspace without prior notification, accentuating the importance of respecting national sovereignty.
He further clarified that he was not forewarned about either the drone activity or the naval exercises by China, despite accusations to the contrary. While acknowledging the challenges of addressing such incursions due to PNG’s limited defense capabilities, Tkatchenko emphasized the need for transparency from foreign militaries in the region.
