The Ministry of Immigration is currently in a state of uncertainty as it awaits the results of an investigation into unauthorized passport issuances. Director Amelia Komaisavai has been on leave since November 2023 while the case is being handled by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Immigration Minister Viliame Naupoto has stated that a decision regarding Komaisavai’s future will be made once the investigation concludes. In the interim, Taraivini Savou has stepped in as the Acting Director of Immigration.
This situation follows significant scrutiny over the practices of the immigration department, particularly concerning allegations related to the issuance of passports for children of individuals linked to human rights violations involving the Grace Road group. The government’s response has included measures to enhance transparency and accountability within the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration.
As the investigation unfolds, there is hope that it will lead to necessary reforms that strengthen the integrity of immigration processes and foster public trust in government operations. The proactive approach taken by the authorities reflects a commitment to addressing serious allegations while ensuring that immigration protocols are upheld with fairness and integrity.
