The Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, expressed his commitment to addressing ongoing issues within the Police portfolio and stated that he would await the completion of investigations regarding his involvement in a controversy linked to the issuing of passports to the children of foreign nationals connected to the Grace Road human rights allegations.
In light of these inquiries, Minister Tikoduadua has voluntarily stepped back from his responsibilities related to Immigration and the Police, leading Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to temporarily oversee these roles.
Tikoduadua has emphasized the need for a prompt appointment of a new Commissioner of Police, noting that he understands the urgency despite no longer being in the ministerial role. He mentioned that there has been significant progress in renewing partnerships with Australia under the Vuvale Partnership, which aims to enhance policing capabilities in Fiji.
He highlighted the importance of appointing the new Commissioner of Police and mentioned a dedicated consultant who would mentor the incoming commissioner. Additionally, he confirmed that other foreign experts, three from Australia and one from New Zealand, are set to join to help elevate policing standards in Fiji.
Tikoduadua also referenced the ‘Restore Blue’ initiative, which features strategies aimed at improving the Fiji Police Force, and noted that this has been handed over to the Prime Minister and Minister for Police for further action. He acknowledges that much remains to be done and will await guidance from the Prime Minister regarding potential reshuffles in the cabinet.
This situation, while challenging, presents an opportunity for significant reforms within the Fiji Police Force, driven by international collaboration and shared expertise. The focus on strategic partnerships and the commitment to enhancing policing standards is a positive step towards building a more effective law enforcement system in Fiji.
The expectation for a new Commissioner and the external support indicates a proactive approach to police reforms, which could lead to improved public trust and safety in the community.
