The Suva Bus Stand is facing challenges with its road conditions, primarily caused by issues related to underground drainage rather than visible surface damage. Minister for Public Works and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, highlighted that the ongoing problems stem from years of clogged drains and blocked culverts situated beneath the road.

“The situation at the Suva bus station is not a matter of surface repair; it begins below ground level, with blocked drains and outlets,” Ro Filipe explained. He noted that these obstructions have accumulated over time, contributing significantly to the deteriorating road conditions.

To address the issue, repair work is currently focused on the replacement and clearing of the underground drainage systems. However, recent heavy rainfalls have temporarily slowed down these efforts. “It is crucial to resolve the drainage issues before we can proceed with surface repairs,” he stated.

Reassurances have been given that the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is treating these repairs as a high priority. With improved weather conditions anticipated shortly, it is expected that work can resume without further delays. Ro Filipe communicated that, after discussions with the FRA, they remain committed to prioritizing the necessary repairs.

This proactive approach and commitment to resolving the underlying issues reflect a dedicated effort to improve public infrastructure and ensure the safety and functionality of the Suva Bus Stand for commuters.

In summary, the Minister emphasized that addressing underground drainage problems is essential for effective road maintenance and that continued work on these repairs is anticipated to commence soon.
