Two hundred educators in Fiji are currently participating in the inaugural Access Teacher Training Workshop, a significant initiative funded by a US$40,000 grant from the United States. Launched by Stephanie Fitzmaurice, the Regional Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy, this workshop emphasizes the U.S. commitment to enhancing education and empowering teachers in Fiji.
The workshops are organized by the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) Youth Wing and are focused on literacy training aligned with Fiji’s new literacy curriculum for primary education. The sessions are being held across various training centers in Suva, Rakiraki, and Nadi, ensuring wide accessibility for teachers of different backgrounds.
Notable facilitators include Dr. Doaa Rashed, an English Language Specialist from Rutgers University, along with Setareki Delana from Fiji’s Ministry of Education and Torika Jitoko, a Literacy & Numeracy Coach with the Australia-Fiji Program Support Facility.
During the launch, Fitzmaurice commended the dedication of the teachers, stating that their hard work is crucial for making a positive impact in classrooms throughout Fiji. She called for ongoing investment in education to inspire learning and unlock new opportunities for the youth.
This training workshop is part of the broader English Access Microscholarship Program, which aims to equip talented secondary school students worldwide with foundational English language skills. Since its inception in 2004, this program has positively impacted over 200,000 students in more than 90 countries, promoting essential communication and leadership skills that pave the way for future educational and professional opportunities.
Overall, the Access Teacher Training Workshop represents a significant step toward improving educational standards and teacher capabilities in Fiji. By investing in educators, the initiative not only provides immediate benefits to the participants but also lays a foundation for a brighter future for the nation’s students, reflecting a hopeful outlook on the educational landscape in Fiji.
