A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the Far Eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, prompting tsunami warnings across the Pacific Rim that reached as far as French Polynesia and Chile. The shallow earthquake, occurring at a depth of 19.3 kilometers and centered about 119 kilometers southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, shook the region severely and led to the evacuation orders for large swaths of Japan’s eastern coastline, which was still recovering from the catastrophic 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
Local reports indicate that the quake caused structural damage, with injuries being reported in the remote areas of Russia. Fortunately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted the absence of casualties, attributing this to well-constructed buildings and effective alert systems in place. Affected coastal areas in Hawaii also received evacuation orders as a precaution.
As the tremors subsided, authorities in Japan, Hawaii, and Russia downgraded most tsunami alerts, although warnings remained in effect for parts of French Polynesia, where initial waves were felt on the Marquesas Islands. The highest waves were projected to reach up to 2.5 meters, with residents being advised to seek higher ground. Reports of small initial wave surges hitting Nuku Hiva, the largest of the Marquesas, came in, but these were smaller than originally anticipated.
Russian scientists have indicated that this is the strongest quake to hit the Kamchatka region since 1952. Following the earthquake, volcanic activity increased, with the Klyuchevskoy volcano beginning to erupt, spewing lava and ash. This volcano, located approximately 450 kilometers north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is one of the most active in the world, and the eruptions indicate a significant geological response to the seismic event.
The Kamchatka Peninsula is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its intense seismic activity.
