Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has highlighted the need for former Women’s Minister Lynda Tabuya to work on restoring her credibility within her political party and among the public. Responding to inquiries from citizens during his ‘A Conversation with the PM’ column, Rabuka emphasized that Tabuya has a significant journey ahead to regain the trust necessary for leadership.

He stated, “I believe she has a lot to do to repair the damage she has done to herself and to the party, to regain the confidence required to lead the party and the nation.” This comes amidst discussions around potential leadership within the party, where the Prime Minister noted that there are several capable individuals prepared to take on leadership roles.

Rabuka reiterated the notion that the ultimate decision regarding leadership should be made by voters, stressing the importance of public perception of character, capabilities, strengths, and weaknesses in determining who is fit for national leadership. He mentioned, “It is a matter for the party and the voters in the country to decide.”

Looking ahead, Rabuka confirmed that Tabuya remains eligible to contest the 2026 general election with The People’s Alliance, suggesting a commitment to inclusive political representation. He added that the party must be ready to stand independently as a multi-ethnic entity leading into the upcoming election.

As the political landscape evolves, the emphasis on rebuilding trust and credibility is crucial for any leader aiming for national influence. With the potential for growth and renewal, the next electoral cycle may offer a fresh chance for leaders to engage openly with the electorate.

In summary, the focus remains on the need for personal and party accountability in leadership, which may ultimately strengthen democratic processes in Fiji, paving the way for a more unified political front in the future.
