A tropical disturbance designated TD09F is forecast to enter Fiji waters from the northeast of Vanua Levu, potentially evolving into a Tropical Depression by tomorrow. As reported by the Fiji Meteorological Services, TD09F is currently positioned to the far northeast of Fiji, tracking south and likely intensifying gradually. While there is a low to moderate chance for this disturbance to develop into a Tropical Cyclone, vigilance remains crucial.
A strong wind warning is currently in effect for the Northern Division and northeastern areas of Viti Levu, specifically from Tailevu North to Rakiraki, as well as the Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu, including adjacent smaller islands. Moreover, heavy rain alerts are issued for the entire Northern Division, Yasawa Group, and extended to the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, along with parts of the eastern half of Viti Levu, impacting areas such as Sigatoka, Serua-Namosi, and Navua.
As the disturbance progresses, strong winds are anticipated, with speeds reaching up to 50 km/h and gusts potentially hitting 65 km/h in the affected regions. Seas are predicted to become increasingly rough, and forecasts suggest that periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms may affect various areas, especially in the Northern Division, Yasawa, and Lomaiviti groups.
Similar conditions were observed with the previous disturbance TD01F, which also posed challenges with heavy rains and strong winds, signaling the need for community preparedness and awareness. The sentiment of solidarity during such weather events remains vital as residents are reminded to stay informed, take precautions, and support one another in anticipation of the weather changes ahead.
Despite the challenges posed by these weather systems, there is hope that preparation and community resilience will help mitigate the impacts, fostering unity and strength among the residents of Fiji as they navigate through potential adversities.
