Tropical Cyclone Rae is forecasted to strengthen into a severe tropical cyclone later today, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service. The cyclone is currently positioned just east of Vanua Levu and is progressing towards the Lau Group at around 15 km/h.
In light of the approaching severe weather, a hurricane warning is active for the Moala Group, while a storm warning has been issued across the entire Lau Group, as well as Nairai and Gau. Strong wind warnings are also in place for the eastern regions of Vanua Levu, including Cikobia, Naqele Levu, Taveuni, Koro, Ovalau, and Ono-i-Lau. Furthermore, a heavy rain warning is extended to the whole Fiji Group, which raises concerns about flooding in low-lying areas.
Current forecasts indicate that Tropical Cyclone Rae, currently categorized as a Category 2 cyclone, may further intensify as it moves south-southwest over the Lau Group. Its development from a tropical depression heightens the urgency for residents to stay alert and prepared. Local leaders are urging community solidarity, emphasizing lessons learned from past experiences where working together has successfully reduced the impacts of severe weather.
As Fijians face this challenging situation, they are reminded of the necessity to secure their properties, stockpile emergency supplies, and maintain open lines of communication. While Tropical Cyclone Rae presents significant challenges, it also serves as an opportunity for communities to come together and reinforce their resilience against such adversities.
Residents are urged to keep informed through local updates regarding the cyclone’s trajectory and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families.
