Inspiring narratives often emerge from the lives of individuals overcoming adversity, and 18-year-old Esther Lusiana Kuva exemplifies this resilient spirit. As the head girl and dux recipient at Nakasi High School, Esther recently dedicated her educational success to the memory of her mother, who tragically passed away from bone cancer last year.
Emotional reflections filled the air when Esther was announced as the school dux. “It was hard trying to juggle my school, my role in the school and all; at this point I’m even shocked to be scooping all these awards,” she remarked, acknowledging the challenges she faced while balancing her responsibilities and grief.
Gratitude played a significant role in Esther’s journey, as she expressed heartfelt thanks for those who supported her through her trials, including her aunt, uncle, and grandmother. “Although my mother isn’t here physically, I know she is here with me spiritually,” Esther shared, highlighting the powerful connection she feels with her mother despite her absence.
Esther’s hard work has clearly paid off, as she was honored with multiple awards during the ceremony, including Year 13 prize, Leadership award, Year 13 distinction award, and numerous subject awards in English, Pure Mathematics, Biology, and Physics. The pride of her family, particularly her 71-year-old grandmother Ana Qitialewa, was evident as they celebrated her achievements. “I know her mom would be so proud of her right now and what she has achieved,” Ms. Qitialewa expressed.
Looking ahead, the family is preparing to move to a new home in Koronivia. Esther has aspirations to enter the medical field, torn between nursing and dental care. Her advisor, she notes, is simple yet profound: “Sacrifice and dedication are the key, and in everything you do, put God first and He will do the rest.”
