The Suva Magistrate’s Court has officially scheduled a trial for former Acting Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Salote Panapasa. During a recent appearance before Magistrate Krishan Prasad, Panapasa faced two counts of abuse of office and an additional charge of general dishonesty leading to a loss.
The allegations claim that between August 1 and September 30, 2023, while employed as a civil servant in Suva, Panapasa directed officers to use materials from the Corrections Service for her personal residence in Kinoya. Furthermore, it is alleged that from August 1 to October 31, 2023, she instructed a corrections officer to modify weekly reports to legitimize the materials’ use at her home.
The court was initially set to review the agreed facts of the case; however, FICAC lawyer Mary Takinana reported that Panapasa’s legal team had only concurred on two facts—her identity and her position—while disputing the remainder of the claims made by FICAC. Both sides agreed to proceed with the trial, which is scheduled for June 23 to 27, 2024, and Panapasa’s bail has been extended.
This case highlights the importance of accountability and transparency within public service. The legal proceedings will allow for a thorough examination of the facts and ensure that justice is served.
In a hopeful light, it reflects a commitment to upholding ethical standards in government roles, assuring citizens that any wrongdoing will be addressed appropriately.
