The Ministry for Public Works is focusing on the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant, viewing it as a crucial infrastructure project aimed at addressing water supply issues in the Suva-Nausori corridor. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau revealed that the plant is currently operating beyond its design limits, delivering 75 million liters of water daily, despite being built for just 60 million liters. This excessive demand is placing significant stress on the plant and raises concerns over its sustainability.

To tackle these pressing challenges, the government, through the Water Authority of Fiji, is rolling out several strategic initiatives. These include the installation of a trash boom at the Savura intake to filter debris during heavy rainfall and the introduction of bypass pumping systems for better water flow management. Furthermore, upgrades in chemical treatment protocols are being implemented to ensure that the water remains safe for consumption, even during varying conditions.

Looking ahead, Tuisawau announced an ambitious $35 million initiative that will involve constructing a new pipeline, pump station, and reservoir. This project is scheduled to kick off in April 2025 and is projected to take between 12 and 18 months to complete, promising to considerably alleviate the ongoing water supply difficulties in the region.

Local leaders and government officials are optimistic that these proactive measures will successfully resolve the significant water challenges faced by residents of Suva, Nausori, Tamavua, and Sakoca by the end of the government’s four-year term. Given the community’s previous frustrations over frequent water shortages, these plans herald a dedicated commitment to enhancing water reliability and quality for the future. If these improvements are executed effectively, residents can look forward to a more stable and dependable water supply as part of their daily lives.

This development not only addresses immediate concerns but also reflects the government’s long-term vision for sustainable water management, aiming to foster a better living environment for all citizens in the affected areas.
