The New Valley model is being hailed as a transformative initiative for rural farmers in Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made these remarks during the launch of the New Valley Processors’ Processing and Cold Chain Facility in Naboutini, Sabeto, Nadi, highlighting the potential for these farmers to move beyond subsistence farming into commercial agricultural practices.
Rabuka emphasized that many rural farmers have struggled with limited access to markets and essential resources. The New Valley Processors initiative is poised to change this dynamic by providing comprehensive support through all stages of farming, from land preparation to the procurement of crops at competitive prices. He expressed confidence that this venture will not only ease the financial burden on farmers but also enhance their overall livelihoods.
With a network of 10,400 farmers across 126 clusters—from Rakiraki to Sigatoka—Rabuka noted the significant ripple effect a single company can have across a vast demographic. He particularly commended the hardworking farmers in the highland provinces of Ra, Naitasiri, and Nadroga-Navosa, where individuals often undertake strenuous journeys to cultivate crops on steep terrains. Despite the challenges posed by poor infrastructure, these farmers produce high-quality root crops and vegetables that supply both local and urban markets.
Rabuka also underscored the importance of the initiative’s slogan, “Markets Beyond Mountains,” which encapsulates the vision of breaking down geographic barriers that have historically isolated farmers from crucial economic opportunities. By connecting rural communities to broader market access, this plan brings hope for empowerment and improved living standards.
