A tragic incident occurred in Kerebula, Nadi, where a woman in her 20s was fatally stabbed by her partner. The victim was discovered inside her home with visible injuries. The suspect, a man in his 40s, is alleged to have inflicted the serious wounds that led to her death. He has since been arrested and is in police custody.
This unfortunate event echoes a similar case reported recently in Raiwaqa, Suva, where another woman in her mid-20s was found dead after suffering injuries from her partner during a heated confrontation. The suspect in that case fled the scene and evaded law enforcement for an extended period. Authorities emphasized that violence against women remains a pervasive issue in Fiji, with statistics indicating that nearly two out of three women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetimes.
In response to these distressing incidents, the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has called for swift justice and urged community action to combat violence against women. Minister Lynda Tabuya has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing this crisis, highlighting the availability of support through organizations like the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre. The Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls, launched in June 2023, aims to tackle this ongoing issue.
It is crucial for communities to unite in creating safe environments for all women and girls, ensuring that no one has to live in fear of violence.
