Police have reported that a man in his 60s from Nasavu Village in Ra has become Fiji’s latest road fatality, following a tragic motor vehicle accident in Wairuku, Rakiraki last night. The incident occurred when the vehicle, driven by a man in his 30s, crashed into a drain culvert. The deceased was a passenger, and along with three other passengers and the driver, he was immediately transported to Rakiraki Hospital for treatment.

While two of the three remaining passengers are still hospitalized, one has been transferred to Lautoka Aspen Hospital for further care. The driver of the vehicle is expected to be questioned as investigations into the accident continue.

This incident is part of a concerning trend regarding road safety in Fiji. Recent reports highlight the ongoing dangers on the roads, with the country facing a rise in road fatalities despite a decrease in the overall road death toll from last year. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana recently noted that the current road death toll stands at 38, a significant reduction from 62 fatalities during the same period last year, which reflects the potential effectiveness of road safety campaigns.

As investigations proceed, authorities emphasize the critical need for increased road safety awareness, urging the community to adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize safe driving practices. The hope is that through continued efforts and collaboration, these tragedies can be mitigated, enhancing safety for all road users.

This situation, while tragic, underscores the importance of vigilance on the roads and the need for sustained efforts in traffic safety initiatives.
