The Fiji Police Force has issued a renewed warning regarding the hazards of excessive alcohol consumption, emphasizing that it can lead to severe injuries or even fatalities. This warning comes in the wake of a tragic road accident in Waitolu, Naitasiri, which claimed the lives of two men on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the two victims, aged 21 and 45, were allegedly intoxicated and engaged in a confrontation that spilled onto the main road. They were subsequently struck by a bus operated by a 30-year-old driver. The younger victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Vunidawa Hospital, while the older victim succumbed to his injuries the following morning after being transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
SSP Divuana emphasized that the unfortunate accident might have been preventable had the victims’ judgment not been impaired by alcohol. He highlighted that the dangers extend beyond the individuals consuming alcohol, putting all road users at risk, including drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
He urged the public to act responsibly and pointed out that two families are now grieving the losses of their loved ones during this holiday season. “We cannot stress enough the need to be responsible and take accountability for your actions,” Divuana remarked. He reiterated that excessive alcohol consumption slows one’s reaction time and impairs decision-making regarding safety.
Despite the grim statistics, with the national road death toll currently at 58, a decrease from 74 at the same time last year, there remains a pressing need for continued awareness and caution on the roads, particularly during the festive season.
It is important to remember the impact of alcohol on decision-making and to prioritize safety for oneself and others. By spreading awareness and promoting responsible behavior, communities can work together to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
Overall, this serves as a reminder to cherish and safeguard the lives of loved ones during this season, fostering a culture of responsibility on the roads.
