The heartbreaking story of 11-year-old Roger Qoro came to light on New Year’s Day when he lost his life tragically after being thrown from a moving truck. Known for his remarkable talent and dreams, Roger’s passing has left his family in mourning.
Authorities are currently looking into the circumstances that led to this devastating accident. It is believed that while traveling on the back of a carrier truck along Natadola, Roger was ejected when the vehicle struck a pothole, causing him to fall onto the road. Despite being rushed to Sigatoka Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Roger, a Year 6 student, had numerous ambitions, including a desire to become an aircraft engineer and play rugby for the national team. His father, Roger Qoro Sr., shared the pain of losing his son, recalling his dreams of showcasing his talents on television and collecting medals from sports competitions. Roger had excelled both academically and athletically, consistently ranking in the top two of his class and earning accolades in various sports events.
His father revealed that Roger was expected to be appointed as deputy head boy at Sabeto District School this year, highlighting his commitment and hard work in his studies and sports. Known within the community as the “Nadi Golden Boy,” Roger was not only a dedicated student but also took on the role of leading family prayers and attending church services regularly.
The accident occurred during a church picnic trip when Roger decided to board the carrier truck with his friends to return home. His father described the moment he learned of the tragedy while at work, revealing the emotional turmoil he experienced upon being told about Roger’s fall.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, expressed sorrow over the incident and highlighted the continuous need for road safety measures, particularly during festive seasons, emphasizing that driver negligence can lead to such tragic outcomes.
Currently, Roger’s body is at Sigatoka Hospital, pending a post-mortem examination. This tragic incident serves as a harsh reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating impact that negligence can have on families.
