Family and friends are mourning the unexpected loss of Ashween Lal, the General Secretary of the Fiji Taxi Association, who passed away at his home in Rakiraki yesterday afternoon. Mr. Lal had been a dedicated advocate for the rights of taxi operators in Fiji since his election in August 2018.

Assistant Minister for Justice, Ratu Josaia Niudamu, expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “Isa Ashween, do sad indeed. A sad day for Rakiraki town and our taxi industry.” His contributions to the industry and the community will be remembered, as he was known for his strong voice in advocating for better conditions for taxi operators.

The funeral arrangements are yet to be disclosed. This sudden news comes as the taxi community reflects on the importance of safety and support for one another during difficult times, especially in light of recent events that have affected the local transportation sector.

In recent related incidents, safety concerns for taxi drivers have been prominent. This comes after a tragic road accident in Rakiraki that resulted in the death of a 27-year-old man, which has raised alarm among taxi drivers regarding road safety. Local authorities report a decreasing trend in road fatalities this year compared to the previous year, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve road safety measures.

The Fiji Taxi Association is likely to continue to address these concerns moving forward, ensuring that the legacy of advocates like Mr. Lal inspires further actions towards enhancing the safety and rights of taxi operators in Fiji.
