A tragic incident has claimed the life of an 8-year-old child, marking the latest victim of road fatalities in the country. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the child was crossing Edinburgh Drive with her father on Thursday night when they were struck by a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man.

Both the child and her father were quickly transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, but unfortunately, the young girl was pronounced dead upon arrival.

SSP Divuana noted that the national road death toll has reached 55 this year, which shows a slight improvement compared to 74 fatalities reported during the same period last year. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the driver is expected to be questioned soon.

This heartbreaking event highlights the ongoing issue of road safety and the importance of measures to protect vulnerable pedestrians, especially children. As authorities continue to investigate, it is crucial for communities to come together and advocate for safer road practices to prevent such tragedies in the future.

In summary, while the loss of life is devastating, the decrease in overall road fatalities compared to last year brings a glimmer of hope for improved safety measures on the roads.
