Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has emphasized the critical need to prioritize children’s welfare following a recent incident where a toddler was found wandering alone on Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. The child was taken to a police station by two women who discovered him alone.

In light of this occurrence, ACP Chew stated that law enforcement would explore all possible avenues to understand the reasons behind such neglect cases. The police had earlier posted on their official Facebook page, asking the public for help in identifying the child’s parents or guardians. After the post gained traction, the toddler was successfully reunited with his family.

Chew indicated that in situations like this, authorities would assess whether negligence was involved, which could potentially lead to legal repercussions for parents and guardians. “This is not the first case of this nature we have encountered,” he remarked. He expressed concern and reiterated that any incidents involving children would involve scrutiny of parental supervision, as there have been previous cases where children faced serious harm due to negligence.

He referenced past tragedies where children suffered injuries or were fatalities due to lack of supervision, emphasizing that these are avoidable situations. “Young children are naturally curious, and it only takes a moment for tragedy to strike,” he said, urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant.

Additionally, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran addressed the incident, urging caregivers to prioritize the safety and whereabouts of their children. She pointed out the recent death of a one-year-old boy in Naitonitoni, Navua, who was allegedly struck by a vehicle after leaving home unnoticed.

“The issue of child protection requires serious consideration,” Kiran stated, acknowledging the challenges that parents in urban areas face in securing childcare. However, she maintained that with the right support, neglect can be prevented and lives can be saved.
