A tragic motor vehicle accident in Sigatoka claimed the life of a man in his 20s yesterday. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the deceased was one of four passengers in a vehicle operated by a 22-year-old driver. The vehicle reportedly veered off Valley Road and rolled over multiple times near Navula during the afternoon.
SSP Divuana noted that the driver appears to have lost control of the car, leading to the accident. The impact was severe enough that the victim was ejected from the vehicle, suffering critical injuries that ultimately resulted in his death.
The remaining passengers, along with the driver, were quickly transported to Sigatoka Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical care while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
In a broader context, it’s important to highlight that the national road death toll now stands at 55, showing a decrease from 74 fatalities during the same period last year. This decline suggests that road safety campaigns and regulations may be making a positive impact, even as individual tragedies like this one remind us of the risks associated with driving.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to remain vigilant to protect not only themselves but also their passengers.
