A family in Vunicagi, Dreketi, is grieving the tragic loss of their seven-year-old son, Krisnav Krisav Prasad, who lost his life in a heartbreaking hit-and-run accident on Tuesday. The incident took place as Krisnav was crossing the Dreketi Highway near Basikalave Settlement on his way home from Dreketi Primary School. Reports indicate that he was struck by a man in his 50s driving the vehicle, and tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
Krisnav’s father, Tamlesh Prasad, who received the devastating news while at work, rushed to the site only to find his son lifeless. He has called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident to hold the responsible driver accountable.
In response to this tragedy, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has emphasized the need for heightened caution among road users, particularly in areas surrounding schools. LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa expressed condolences to the grieving family and underscored the vital importance of vigilant and responsible driving. He also highlighted the necessity for drivers to reduce their speed near schools and announced plans for stringent enforcement of traffic laws.
This incident has reignited urgent discussions about road safety for children and vulnerable pedestrians in Fiji. Recent months have seen similar accidents, raising alarm about the safety of young pedestrians. Nevertheless, there is a glimmer of hope, as the national road death toll has shown a decrease this year, suggesting that heightened awareness and road safety initiatives may be effectively making a difference.
In this difficult time, communities are encouraged to unite in efforts to improve road safety measures to protect the most vulnerable road users. While the pain endured by the Prasad family is profound and irreplaceable, there remains hope that through collaborative action and continuous education, future accidents can be minimized, promoting a safer environment for all children.
