Residents of Veiquwawa, Jittu Estate Settlement in Raiwaqa, Suva, are grieving the tragic loss of a 35-year-old woman who died in a house fire that occurred yesterday afternoon. The fire reportedly ignited between 1:30 PM and 2 PM, engulfing the home rapidly and leaving little time for escape.

Neighbor Michael Steven, who bravely attempted to assist the family, managed to rescue the youngest child, a one-year-old, while the mother, Viliame Baravi’s wife, was tragically trapped and could not be saved. Steven recounted that Mr. Baravi was also injured in the attempt to save his family and was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.

Another neighbor, Salveena Singh, described the intensity with which the fire spread, noting that an explosion was heard just moments before the flames took over. “By the time the firefighters arrived, the entire house was engulfed in flames,” Singh said, highlighting the fire’s rapid progression and its overwhelming devastation.

Firefighters worked diligently to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent properties, ensuring that other homes in the area were not affected during the emergency response. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire to determine its cause.

This incident reflects a concerning trend in the area, as recent statistics indicate an increase in fire-related occurrences, prompting the Fiji Police Force to urge local residents to assess their homes and eliminate potential fire hazards.

As communities come together in the wake of this tragedy, there’s a strong emphasis on the importance of fire safety awareness and preparedness. Local authorities advocate for regular safety inspections and proactive measures within households to mitigate risks. The resilience of the affected families and community spirit displayed during such a trying time may foster a culture of safety, encouraging residents to collaborate in enhancing their collective fire safety measures.

This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for vigilance and preparedness against fire hazards. While the loss is profound, it may catalyze positive changes in community safety practices, enhancing the overall well-being of the neighborhood.
