Residents of Veiquwawa in the Jittu Estate Settlement, Suva, are mourning the tragic death of a 35-year-old woman who lost her life in a devastating house fire that ignited yesterday afternoon. The fire broke out between 1:30 PM and 2 PM, quickly engulfing the home and leaving little time for escape.
Michael Steven, a neighbor who displayed remarkable bravery, managed to rescue the couple’s one-year-old child, but unfortunately, Viliame Baravi’s wife was trapped inside and could not be saved. Mr. Baravi was injured while attempting to rescue his family and was later taken to the hospital for medical care.
Another neighbor, Salveena Singh, reported the fire’s swift and fierce escalation, noting that an explosion was heard just moments before the flames overtook the home. “By the time the firefighters arrived, the entire house was engulfed in flames,” Singh recounted, underscoring the intensity and rapid spread of the fire.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from extending to nearby houses, safeguarding other properties during the emergency response. Authorities are currently looking into the cause of the fire.
This tragic incident highlights a troubling increase in fire-related emergencies in the region, prompting the Fiji Police Force to encourage residents to evaluate their homes for potential fire hazards. The local community is rallying together in the aftermath, focusing on the critical importance of fire safety awareness and preparedness.
Local officials are advocating for regular safety inspections and the implementation of proactive measures within homes to reduce risks.
