A fire on Kanace Road in Nasinu has tragically left six families without homes. The fire ignited around midday, devastating a five-flat residential building and extending to a nearby two-bedroom house. Sherine Lata, who was working at the time, expressed her heartbreak, stating that her family lost everything in the blaze—“We lost absolutely everything,” she lamented.

Swaran Lata, another resident whose home was partially spared by the quick action of firefighters, expressed gratitude for her saved residence. At the time of the incident, she was preparing for an afternoon church service when she was informed of the fire.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) and local police are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which has raised serious concerns regarding fire safety and emergency response capabilities in the area. The incident underscores the critical need for improved fire safety measures, particularly in residential communities.

Past incidents in the region, such as a devastating fire in Vunivau that left a family homeless, highlight ongoing challenges with timely emergency responses. In that case, despite efforts to alert the National Fire Authority, delayed responses led to significant losses. Similarly, conversations around fire safety regulations have been amplified.

As the affected families seek assistance and community support, there is hope that these tragedies will prompt meaningful discussions and actions toward enhancing fire safety protocols and preparedness. The resilience shown by the families affected by these fires and the solidarity from their neighbors reflect the strength of community in facing adversity.
