The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all road users—including parents, guardians, school communities, and drivers—to remain vigilant and cautious, particularly around schoolchildren crossing streets, in light of a tragic accident in Dreketi, Labasa, which resulted in the death of an eight-year-old student.
According to preliminary police reports, the young boy lost his life after he was allegedly struck by an oncoming vehicle while crossing the road unexpectedly after getting off a licensed transport carrier. The impact was severe, propelling the child around 24 meters from the initial point of collision before he landed on the tar-sealed road.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed his condolences to the mourning family and highlighted that this incident serves as a crucial reminder for all road users to exercise heightened caution. He pointed out that children can act unpredictably, making it imperative for drivers to be particularly attentive in areas frequented by young pedestrians.
This tragic event follows a similar plea made by Rokosawa after the death of another child in Sabeto, Nadi, where a 12-year-old lost his life in a similar series of circumstances after falling from a moving vehicle that hit potholes. In both instances, LTA officials have emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers are urged to slow down, maintain control of their vehicles, and ensure that passengers are safely seated.
As of now, the road death toll stands at three compared to 15 during the same time last year, indicating a need for ongoing efforts to improve road safety and minimize risks for everyone. The LTA’s call for vigilance and responsibility aims to foster a culture of safety among all road users, ultimately striving to prevent further tragedies.
In light of these incidents, there is hope that increased awareness around road safety and adherence to guidelines can lead to safer travel conditions for everyone, especially for the most vulnerable—our children.
