A family in Vunivau, Labasa, has endured a tragic loss after their home, built over the course of 45 years and valued at $200,000, was destroyed by fire last Friday night. Prasheel Naicker, 27, reported that his father, grandmother, and uncle were present in the house at the time of the fire, which broke out while he was out visiting relatives in Labasa Town.

The blaze reportedly started in the family’s prayer room and quickly escalated to engulf the roof. Fortunately, two passersby noticed the flames and informed the family. Despite Naicker’s efforts to alert the National Fire Authority (NFA)—including making multiple phone calls and rushing to the local fire station to encourage a swift response—the firefighting team arrived too late to save any belongings or the structure itself.

This incident marks the second devastating house fire in the Northern Division within just two weeks; the first incident occurred on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, Labasa, where another family lost their home while they were abroad, with damages estimated at around $250,000. Both incidents have raised serious concerns regarding fire safety and emergency response capabilities in these rural areas, where resources may be limited.

Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, the Acting Divisional Police Commander North, confirmed that investigations into both fires are ongoing. These incidents have sparked discussions about the urgent need for improved fire safety measures and better emergency response protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.

While the losses faced by the Naicker family are profound, there is a glimmer of hope that their situation, along with that of the other affected family, will drive significant improvements in fire safety infrastructure and community preparedness. The resilience shown by these families and the support from their community could catalyze essential changes, creating a safer environment for all residents and preventing such devastating losses in the future.
