A tragic fire has destroyed a family home on Belo Street in Samabula, Suva, leaving its inhabitants devastated just weeks after losing their father. The fire erupted around 11:45 AM today, completely engulfing the first flat of the property, which housed three bedrooms. Fortunately, firefighters managed to save the second flat, which was unoccupied at the time.

The home, occupied by a brother and sister who have lived there for four decades, is estimated to have sustained about $1 million in damages. Nalili Bhai, the 59-year-old homeowner, expressed her heartbreak over the loss. At the time of the incident, her 55-year-old brother, believed to have a mental health condition, was inside the flat. Neighbors attempted to control the flames using a hosepipe, but the fire spread too quickly for anyone to intervene effectively.

While the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, the family suspects it may have resulted from a malfunctioning power board, and an investigation is currently underway.

This incident echoes recent events in other parts of Fiji, where families have faced similar devastating losses due to fires. A family in Vunivau, Labasa, experienced a total loss when their home was destroyed in a fire, leading to a collective discussion on the importance of fire safety and effective emergency responses. Ongoing investigations are addressing the challenges faced by fire services in rural areas, prompting a call for improved fire safety measures and community preparedness.

Despite the alarming nature of these events, there is hope that they will lead to reinforced safety protocols and more vigilant community practices, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all residents. The resilience shown by affected families underscores the strength found in community support during such trying times.
