An 8-year-old child has tragically become the latest victim of a road accident in the country. According to Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the young girl was crossing Edinburgh Drive with her father on Thursday evening when a vehicle, driven by a 43-year-old man, reportedly struck them.
Both the girl and her father were promptly taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital; however, the girl was pronounced dead upon arrival.
SSP Divuana noted that the national road death toll currently stands at 55, which is a decrease from 74 fatalities during the same timeframe last year. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the driver involved will soon be questioned.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding road safety, particularly for pedestrians. It serves as a reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant and cautious, especially in areas where children are present.
In light of this tragedy, communities are encouraged to engage in discussions about road safety measures and to advocate for initiatives that protect vulnerable road users, particularly children. There is hope that these efforts can lead to safer roads for everyone.
