A tragic incident has claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy, marking him as the latest victim in the nation’s road fatalities. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the young driver lost control of his vehicle on Korotari Road in Labasa shortly after 1 AM on December 3rd. This unfortunate accident caused the vehicle to veer off the road and collide with a culvert.

Despite being rushed to Labasa Hospital for treatment, the victim succumbed to his injuries. SSP Divuana noted that the teen was operating the vehicle unlawfully without a driver’s license, an aspect that will be further examined during the ongoing investigation.

As for the broader context, the national road death tally now stands at 57, which is an improvement compared to 74 fatalities during the same timeframe last year. This statistic highlights a potential trend in road safety, suggesting that awareness and safety measures may be having a positive impact.

While this incident is heartbreaking, it serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations. With continued education and enforcement, it is hoped that such tragic losses can be minimized in the future.
