The United Nations’ human rights office reported on Friday that there have been at least 798 killings within the last six weeks at aid distribution points in Gaza associated with the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). This includes 615 fatalities near GHF distribution sites and 183 along routes used by various aid convoys. The GHF, which has been delivering food aid since late May, claims to use U.S. security and logistics companies to efficiently get supplies to Gaza. However, it has been criticized for bypassing the established U.N.-led system that, according to Israel, has been compromised by Hamas-led militants looting aid targeted for civilians, an allegation denied by Hamas.

The U.N. has described the GHF’s operational model as “inherently unsafe,” citing its violation of humanitarian impartiality standards, especially following the deaths of many civilians attempting to obtain assistance. Ravina Shamdasani, a spokesperson from the U.N. rights office, expressed deep concern over the deadly incidents occurring during aid distributions, indicating a critical need for reevaluation of the current humanitarian strategies in Gaza.

The GHF’s representatives disputed the U.N.’s figures, calling them “false and misleading” and attributing the majority of fatalities around aid sites to UN-led convoys and military operations. They argued that increased collaboration between the GHF and other organizations could potentially mitigate violent incidents.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have stated they are reviewing recent mass casualty incidents. They maintain that measures are in place, such as fencing and additional routes to help minimize friction between Palestinians and military personnel.

Previous reports concerning the GHF have similarly highlighted a pattern of violence surrounding aid distribution, where desperation among residents attempting to receive food has led to deadly encounters. Despite these tragic episodes, the endurance and resilience of the Gazan population persist as they strive for necessary assistance amidst the ongoing crisis.

The articles indicate an urgent situation in Gaza, revealing that there are increasing calls for improved humanitarian access, the protection of civilians, and a push for diplomatic efforts that could pave the way for a resolution to the conflict. Stakeholders stress the importance of a humanitarian approach that prioritizes the safety and dignity of civilians in these dire circumstances.
