Significant enhancements have been observed in travel times and traffic flow along the busy Suva-Nausori corridor after a series of trial measures implemented earlier this year. The trial initiative began in March, led by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in collaboration with the Fiji Roads Authority, police, and various other agencies.

Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva noted that the trial focused on twelve high-traffic points, incorporating changes such as new slip lanes, right turn restrictions, and improved traffic signal management. This effort aimed to optimize light control, with police actively overseeing traffic signals to facilitate a smoother flow.

Tuinaceva remarked, “One of the blockages was the traffic lights. When the light turned red, it halted the flow. We needed a better solution.” The results have been promising, with peak morning travel times between Suva and Nausori recently dropping to about 40 to 50 minutes— a significant improvement from over one hour and twenty minutes during peak times.

With phase one of the Suva-Nausori traffic trial now complete, permanent alterations are in progress. These adjustments include concrete barriers on Ratu Mara Road to prevent right turns into Ono Street, thus alleviating traffic from Suva, Samabula, and Nausori.

As similar trials in other regions, like the Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials in Nadi Town, demonstrate, engaging the community in feedback collection can lead to further enhancements in local traffic systems. These pro-active steps taken by authorities signify a collaborative approach towards building a sustainable and efficient transportation network, ultimately benefiting all commuters and boosting local socio-economic growth.

These improvements herald a positive shift in how traffic is managed, indicating a hopeful outlook for better commuting experiences along Fiji’s most congested routes. Engaging the public and implementing thoughtful measures reflect growing commitment to continuously enhance transportation infrastructure throughout the region.
