The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki Town due to safety concerns as floodwaters begin to infiltrate local shops. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that the primary aim of these precautions is to ensure the safety of residents and protect the towns’ infrastructure from damage.
Driu noted that the restrictions are also intended to deter potential opportunists from taking advantage of the situation. Currently, four evacuation centers have been established in the Western Division, providing shelter for 226 individuals, a number that is likely to increase if heavy rainfall continues.
As part of the measures in place, the highway between Ba and Rakiraki has been closed to all traffic, and access to Tavua Town has been prohibited. ACP Driu confirmed that all entrances to Ba Town are likewise closed off to vehicles.
Police teams are actively engaged in evacuating residents from vulnerable areas and will remain on alert throughout the night to monitor and respond to the evolving situation.
This proactive response by the Fiji Police Force highlights the community’s commitment to safety and resilience during challenging times. Continued vigilance and support from emergency services can foster hope for those affected as they seek shelter and aid.
