A group of seven individuals, including an American tourist and two foreign residents of Fiji, have fallen ill after consuming cocktails at a resort. Four Australian nationals are currently in critical condition, with authorities suspecting alcohol poisoning as the cause.

Reports indicate that a 56-year-old woman is under continuous medical supervision, while a 19-year-old is suffering from severe medical episodes. Two other Australians, aged 49 and 18, are also hospitalized but are not in as grave condition.

The Fijian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted regarding the involvement of any New Zealanders in this incident. Health ministry inspectors, alongside police, are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the illnesses, which are linked to drinks consumed at the resort’s bar.

These four individuals are being treated at Lautoka Hospital, located approximately three and a half hours from the Warwick Resort on the Coral Coast, where they were staying. An update from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is anticipated later today.

The potential case of alcohol poisoning raises significant concerns for local authorities, given Fiji’s economy heavily depends on tourism. The situation is particularly alarming in light of a recent tragedy in Laos, where methanol poisoning resulted in the deaths of several tourists after consuming contaminated alcohol.

In response to this incident, it is expected that tourism stakeholders will institute precautionary measures to safeguard visitors and maintain the integrity of Fiji’s hospitality industry.

This occurrence serves as a reminder of the importance of quality control in tourism services and the necessity for robust safety practices to protect guests from potential hazards while enhancing the overall reputation of the tourism sector in Fiji.

This article highlights the need for vigilance and accountability in the hospitality industry, encouraging awareness among tourists and stakeholders alike, fostering hope for swift recovery for the affected individuals.
