Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has emphasized the importance of “total policing” among members of the Fiji Police Force, urging them to embrace all aspects of their responsibilities to the public. He conveyed this message during the official inauguration of the new Lautoka Police Station on Monday morning.

In his opening remarks, Rabuka acknowledged the essential support from traditional leaders and landowners, particularly the Momo na Taukei Vidilo and the Vanua of Sukanacagi, as well as the Momo na Tui Vitogo, who provided the land for the new facility. His gratitude extended to the broader community for their involvement in the project, highlighting the significance of collaborative efforts in enhancing public safety.

The Prime Minister called on law enforcement officers to honor the illustrious history of their organization and uphold its motto, salus populi, which translates to “the safety and service of the population.” “The safety and security of the people of Fiji are in your hands,” he stated, reinforcing the expectation that officers understand the weight of their responsibilities while on patrol.

Rabuka articulated that modern policing calls for a comprehensive approach that transcends traditional duties. “We expect what is known as total policing; going above and beyond, serving better, and protecting the interests of all people,” he underscored, advocating for a professional force that seeks to foster greater community trust and cooperation.

Additionally, he appealed to traditional and community leaders to bolster policing efforts in their respective areas, emphasizing the critical role that collective engagement plays in enhancing public safety.

The new Lautoka Police Station, with a budget of $29 million, is not only a significant investment in infrastructure but also serves as the headquarters for the Western Division. This development represents a pivotal step towards strengthening law enforcement capabilities in Fiji, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of its citizens.
