In a significant step towards enhancing financial governance, the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has appointed Tony Ram as a non-voting director on its Board. This move reflects the union’s commitment to sound financial practices and was facilitated through provisions in their articles of association that allow for the co-option of individuals with specialized expertise.
FRU Board chairman John Sanday highlighted that this appointment aligns with the board’s aim to bolster its financial and commercial capabilities. “This year, the board will be considering significant real property investments and related financing and debt structuring. Tony’s background in banking and financial services is directly relevant to that work, and his appointment strengthens the Board’s overall capability in these areas,” Sanday explained.
Tony Ram brings a robust financial background to the role, holding a bachelor’s degree from the University of the South Pacific and significant professional development in governance, financial risk management, and corporate strategy. Currently, he serves as the general manager of retail banking at HFC Bank and is part of the bank’s executive committee, overseeing deposits, lending, and insurance services. His extensive expertise encompasses financial analysis, risk management, business growth, and stakeholder engagement.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Ram stated, “I’m honoured to serve; this is a role of service, and I’m happy to contribute and provide value where necessary. Rugby is not just a game; it’s a religion in our country, and everybody is passionate about it. We all need to contribute and work in a way that continues to support and build the game in the country.”
Co-opted directors, while serving in a non-voting capacity, are subject to endorsement at the next annual general meeting, adhering to the FRU’s governance framework. This appointment is expected to not only strengthen the financial insights of the FRU Board but also ensure the sustainable growth and development of rugby in Fiji, fostering a bright future for the sport within the nation.
