Incoming Sugar Industry Minister Tomasi Tunabuna will continue the efforts to revive the sugar industry, as outlined by outgoing Minister Charan Jeath Singh. During a recent official visit to India, the two discussed the future direction of the industry and the existing plans that Singh wishes Tunabuna to uphold.
Singh emphasized the importance of continuity in the initiatives that have been established, highlighting the success of 15 different assistance programs implemented over the last three years. He expressed optimism that, if these programs persist, the industry could see its annual cane production rise significantly. From a previous yield of 1.3 million tonnes, Singh anticipates an increase to around 1.5 million tonnes this year, marking a 200,000-tonne boost.
Looking ahead, Singh is hopeful that with continued dedication, production could reach 2.5 million tonnes over the next five years. He acknowledged the industry’s challenges on a global scale but affirmed that there is a strong commitment to driving growth and ensuring sustainability in sugar production.
Furthermore, Singh noted that Tunabuna will play a crucial role in establishing a new state-of-the-art mill in the Western Division, with locations under consideration being Rakiraki, Tavua, or Ba. An Expression of Interest has already been called for, signaling progress in this ambitious venture.
Singh is set to transition into the Public Enterprises portfolio on January 19, with Tunabuna officially taking over the Sugar Industry ministerial role. This transition marks a new chapter in an industry that is showing promise for revitalization and sustainability.
