The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has initiated the process to return land rights to landowners by referring 17 cases related to Crown Grants and Native Grants to the government for review. This development was announced by TLTB CEO Solomone Nata during the presentation of the board’s 2023 Annual Report to the Standing Committee on Social Affairs.

In his address, Nata confirmed that these cases have been formally submitted to the Cabinet Standing Committee for evaluation. He emphasized the importance of these steps in acknowledging landowners’ rights over their ancestral lands. “We have submitted around 17 cases to the government to look at reverting some of those Crown Grants and Native Grants back to the landowners. And I believe that submission has been directed to a standing committee,” Nata stated.

Reflecting on TLTB’s progress since its inception 85 years ago, Nata noted that the board has been involved in significant developments over the years. He reported an increase in the wealth fund and a reduction in arrears compared to previous years, including the current and upcoming year. Nata also pointed out TLTB’s engagement in critical legislative reviews, such as the Mahogany Industry Development Act of 2010 and the Surfing Areas Act, as well as contributions to the Employment Relations Bill.

Looking forward, TLTB is awaiting the completion of the review of the iTaukei Land Trust Board Act, signaling ongoing efforts to enhance the legal framework governing land rights in Fiji. This proactive approach highlights the board’s commitment to supporting the interests of landowners and ensuring the proper management of lands for future generations.
