The future of Fiji’s tourism landscape is shifting with the recent change in ownership of Tivua Island, a popular day cruise destination previously managed by Captain Cook Cruises. Now under the guidance of rival operator South Sea Cruises, this change has sparked a mix of surprise and contemplation within the industry.

Captain Cook Cruises has been a significant player in the Fijian tourism scene for over 35 years, originally founded by the respected indigenous Fijian entrepreneur Semi Koroilavesau. The company has heroically navigated the turbulent waters of the COVID pandemic, maintaining operations even when many others had to pause. This resilience has played a vital role in supporting the local economy.

However, the new ownership raises questions about the direction of luxurious cruises in Fiji. While the superyacht sector caters to affluent tourists, Captain Cook’s recent pricing challenges with the MS Caledonian Sky have highlighted difficulties in competitive positioning within the market.

Despite the transition, Captain Cook Cruises, now led by new general manager Robert Wade, will continue to offer cruises to Tivua Island. Wade brings experience from his previous operation at Hideaway Resort and is poised to lead the company through this critical period.

The infusion of South Sea Cruises, backed by Fijian Holdings Limited, aims to enhance Fiji’s tourism offerings. Brent Hill, the CEO of Tourism Fiji, expressed optimism about the seamless transition, emphasizing the potential for elevated guest experiences through collaboration with locals. The redevelopment plans for Tivua Island, set to commence after May, promise a world-class upgrade targeted at international visitors looking for unique Fijian experiences.

As the tourism industry adapts, South Sea Cruises has ambitious plans that include the strategic redeveloping of Tivua Island, which is expected to complement the growing accommodation projects nearby. By 2026, guests will be welcomed back to a revitalized Tivua Island featuring first-rate amenities and opportunities to connect with Fiji’s pristine natural environment.

This shift in ownership and future developments signal a new chapter for Fijian tourism, potentially leading to an expansion of visitors’ experiences while reinforcing the country’s status as a premier travel destination.
