A significant change in Fiji’s tourism landscape has emerged as South Sea Cruises has acquired Tivua Island, a popular day cruise destination previously operated by Captain Cook Cruises. This transition comes after more than 35 years of Captain Cook’s association with the island, which was established by Fijian business leader Semi Koroilavesau. Captain Cook Cruises, which has successfully navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, now faces competition from its rival who is quickly regaining its position in the industry.

Fiji’s tourism sector is currently adapting, highlighting the ongoing demand for luxury experiences and the reality that high-priced superyacht options remain elusive for many operators, including Captain Cook. The recent lease of the MS Caledonian Sky proved to be unfeasible due to cost concerns expressed by international customers, leading to the vessel’s return to the Mediterranean.

In the wake of this change, Captain Cook Cruises intends to maintain its day cruise services to Tivua while welcoming its new general manager, Robert Wade, who brings experience from managing Hideaway Resort on the Coral Coast.

As South Sea Cruises plans to undertake a major redevelopment of Tivua Island after May, this initiative is expected to enhance Fiji’s tourism offerings significantly. According to Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, the integration of South Sea Cruises’ resources, marketing expertise, and logistics guarantees a smooth transition that promises an upgrade to the visitor experience. The new plans for Tivua Island aim to align with the surge in hotel developments in the Nadi and Denarau area, ensuring that international guests have an array of quality day trip options available to them.

The redevelopment is poised to revitalize Tivua Island, turning it into a world-class experience by 2026, featuring improved facilities and access to some of the finest beaches and coral gardens in Fiji. Additionally, South Sea Cruises has exciting plans to introduce a fast-boat experience under its South Sea Cats brand set for launch in April 2025.

This transition marks a hopeful chapter for Fiji’s tourism sector, raising the potential for even more unforgettable experiences, while providing a platform for both Captain Cook Cruises and South Sea Cruises to thrive in a competitive market. The commitment to enhancing Fiji’s tourism experience is a vital sign of resilience and growth in the region amidst changing dynamics.
