The future of Tivua Island, a beloved destination in Fiji’s tourism landscape, is currently in a state of uncertainty following its acquisition by South Sea Cruises from Captain Cook Cruises. This change has left many stakeholders in the industry contemplative about what the transition means for the local tourism culture.
Tivua Island, a popular getaway known for its pristine beauty and day cruise offerings, was founded over two decades ago by Semi Koroilavesau, a notable indigenous Fijian entrepreneur. Captain Cook Cruises, established in partnership with Captain Cook Australia, maintained a strong presence in the industry, even during the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.
This acquisition is seen as a response to evolving market dynamics that may indicate a shift away from luxury expedition cruises, as the local market might not be prepared to support such offerings. Captain Cook had leased the MS Caledonian Sky; however, due to high operating costs, the vessel was ultimately returned to service in the Mediterranean.
Despite this shift, Captain Cook Cruises, now led by General Manager Robert Wade – previously associated with Hideaway Resort – will continue to operate day cruise services to Tivua Island. Stakeholders are optimistic about this transition, with Brent Hill, the CEO of Tourism Fiji, highlighting South Sea Cruises’ robust marketing and logistical capabilities.
The upcoming redevelopment of Tivua Island signals a significant enhancement in the Fijian tourism experience. Scheduled to begin after May 2024, this project aims to modernize the island, amplifying its appeal to international visitors amidst a surge of new resort developments in the Nadi and Denarau regions. South Sea Cruises anticipates that the redeveloped Tivua Island, reopening in 2026, will provide guests with quality experiences complemented by world-class hospitality.
