Shoppers are incurring significant losses due to defective and faulty products, with complaints totaling approximately $1.3 million. Seema Shandil, the CEO of the Consumer Council, revealed that the organization has received 1,596 complaints related to household appliances, electrical items, and various other goods. She emphasized that this figure likely represents just a small portion of the actual issues consumers face in the market.
Shandil pointed out that ongoing market surveillance indicates a persistent influx of unsafe and substandard products. “The monetary value is worth $1.3 million. The Consumer Council always says this is just the tip of the iceberg, as these are the only complaints that we have received as an organization,” she stated. Many consumers do not come forward to lodge complaints, which means many issues remain unreported.
“We know through our market surveillance that there are numerous unsafe, low quality, or substandard items that have entered our market, posing threats to human safety,” Shandil added. In response to this troubling trend, the Consumer Council, alongside government agencies, is taking proactive measures to monitor products and ensure that only safe goods are available for sale.
The focus on enhancing product safety reflects a growing commitment to consumer protection and public health, aiming to create a safer shopping environment for all.
