The High Court in Lautoka has handed down suspended sentences to three juveniles, each receiving two years’ imprisonment for their involvement in an aggravated burglary at Votualevu Public School. This decision was announced on December 15, 2025, following their admission to the crime, which involved stealing sports equipment from the school.

Justice Riyaz Hamza noted that the offense resulted in minimal harm, as the stolen items – two soccer balls, four rugby balls, and a volleyball net – held relatively low value, and there was no inflicted damage or violence associated with the burglary. The judge remarked that on October 19, 2024, the boys, who were between 14 and 15 years old at the time, trespassed on the school grounds and took the items, all of which were subsequently recovered and returned to the school.

The boys pleaded guilty to both aggravated burglary and theft. During the court proceedings, Justice Hamza stated that due to their young age, lack of prior convictions, and demonstrated willingness to take responsibility for their actions, the sentences would be fully suspended for seven years. He expressed confidence in their rehabilitation potential, highlighting their acceptance of wrongdoing and genuine remorse.

In addition to the suspended sentences, the court mandated that the juveniles undergo two years of probation under the supervision of the Department of Social Welfare. They will also receive counseling alongside their parents, with efforts aimed at strengthening family dynamics and parenting skills.

Justice Hamza emphasized the importance of adhering to the suspended sentence and acknowledged that such measures are essential to deter similar criminal behavior and protect the community. The ruling reflects a balanced approach that encourages rehabilitation while underscoring accountability.
