The $200 Back-to-School Boost That Could Backfire on Students

The $200 Back-to-School Boost That Could Backfire on Students

The Ministry of Education has raised concerns about some parents enrolling their children in school solely to benefit from the $200 Back-to-School assistance, only to neglect ongoing educational oversight. Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro brought this issue to light, noting that it has contributed to head teachers rejecting enrolment applications for the upcoming academic year.

Radrodro observed that while student enrolment spikes at the beginning of the year, there is a significant decline by the time examination registration rolls around. This trend reveals a troubling pattern where parental engagement drops after financial support is obtained.

“To ensure our children have future opportunities, it is vital for parents to actively monitor their education,” Radrodro emphasized, encouraging families to maintain a consistent presence in their children’s academic lives. Such engagement is crucial not only for academic success but also for helping students prepare for future employment.
