Athlete Waisake Tewa has returned to Fiji after competing at the recent Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau, where he captured a silver medal in the men’s 200m and a bronze in the 100m events. Tewa clocked 10.60 seconds in the 100m final, finishing behind Papua New Guinea’s Pais Wisil and Tovetuna Tuna. In the 200m final, he secured a time of 21.60 seconds, again landing behind Tuna and ahead of Johnny Bai, also from PNG.
Tewa expressed determination to train harder in pursuit of his goal to win gold in future competitions. “I know I did not manage to achieve that, but upon my return, I know the best way to do that would be to train harder to move further from where I left off,” he stated. His coach played a significant role in motivating him, urging him to focus on individual events rather than merely relying on relay successes, which has traditionally been a strength for Fiji.
In addition to his individual accolades, Tewa contributed to team efforts, helping Fiji secure silver medals in the male 4x100m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay. The 4x100m team finished with a time of 40.76 seconds, trailing PNG, while the mixed team clocked 3:31.77 seconds, also taking second place behind PNG.
The performance of Tewa and the wider Fiji athletics team at the Pacific Mini Games has garnered national pride, showcasing resilience and talent. This spirit reflects a continued hope for success in future competitions, with Tewa firmly in mind as he prepares for his next challenges on the track. The achievements from the games also highlight the team’s development and growing prominence in international athletics.
Fiji’s overall successful participation not only acknowledges individual talent but emphasizes a collective effort that uplifts the nation’s sporting community—a clear indication of the bright future ahead for Fijian athletics.
