Referee Tevita Seletui was honored as the Rookie/Newcomer of the Year at the inaugural Fiji Rugby Referees Awards held on Saturday at the Vodafone Arena in Suva. Seletui, who represents the Lautoka Rugby Referees Association, was nominated alongside fellow referees Katarina Tawa from Suva, Joji Civoniceva from Macuata, and Jope Ravolaca from Nasinu.

The award was presented to Seletui by Jese Saukuru, Minister for Youth and Sports. After the ceremony, Seletui expressed his gratitude to a higher power, stating, “First of all, I would like to thank the Almighty God for giving me this opportunity. Without Him, I am nothing.” He dedicated his achievement to his parents and loved ones back home in Ba.

Hailing from Nasolo, Ba, and with maternal roots in Verata, Tailevu, Seletui shared that he did not expect to receive the award but felt immensely thankful for the recognition. “I wasn’t expecting this win, but I feel very grateful to be given the opportunity to win the Rookie of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year,” he said.

Seletui’s journey as a rugby referee began two years ago when he started officiating primary school matches at St Teresa Primary School in Ba. Although he faced various challenges along the way, he attributed his perseverance to divine guidance. “It hasn’t been easy; I have had to go through the mountains and valleys, but I’m so grateful that someone up there is with me, taking me throughout this journey,” he remarked.

As the year concludes, Seletui highlighted the acknowledgment of his hard work within the refereeing community as a significant achievement. This recognition not only reflects his dedication but also serves as inspiration for aspiring referees in Fiji, showcasing that with determination and support, success can indeed be within reach.
