One veteran tennis player returned to form while another faced an early exit as first-round matches unfolded at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad in Switzerland. Belgian David Goffin, the No. 6 seed, made a successful comeback from a foot injury that sidelined him for two months. He secured a win against 19-year-old Spaniard Martin Landaluce, finishing with a score of 7-6 (2), 6-3 despite challenging windy conditions on the clay surface.

In contrast, three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, who recently celebrated his 40th birthday, was not as fortunate. The Swiss star lost to Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

In another match featuring Argentine players, No. 7 Francisco Comesana triumphed over qualifier Marco Trungelliti, winning 6-3, 6-4. However, No. 8 Arthur Rinderknech from France suffered a setback, losing to Italian qualifier Francesco Passaro 6-1, 7-5, despite having previously defeated Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon just weeks prior.

Additional players advancing in Gstaad included Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo, and Swiss wild card Jerome Kym, all of whom won their matches in three sets.

Meanwhile, at the Nordea Open in Bastad, Sweden, Damir Dzumhur and Vit Kopriva both enjoyed solid performances, advancing with straight-set victories. Dzumhur fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to beat Austria’s Sebastian Ofner 6-4, 6-4, while Kopriva overwhelmed Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien before he retired, winning 6-1, 3-0.

Swede Elias Ymer delighted the local audience by defeating Tristan Boyer 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Other players moving forward include Hugo Gaston, Andrea Pellegrino, and Nicolai Budkov Kjaer.

In Los Cabos, Mexico, at the Mifel Tennis Open, German fifth seed Daniel Altmaier clinched victory over American Mitchell Krueger with a score of 6-4, 6-3, showcasing impressive service performance by winning 84.6% of his first service points. No. 6 seed Yunchaokete Bu of China also advanced after a hard-fought match lasting over two hours, defeating Mexican qualifier Alan Magadan 7-6 (5), 6-2. Other successful competitors included Australians Tristan Schoolkate and James Duckworth, as well as Argentine Juan Pablo Ficovich.

This year’s tournaments are full of compelling stories, highlighting the resilience and skills of both emerging and seasoned talents, fueling excitement for the next rounds as players vie for progression and success.
